Neoprene Boots will keep your feet warm, and also protected from some of the harsh landscapes that kayakers may encounter.
Water will enter your neoprene shoes during launching, landing and normal paddling. This water entry can only really be avoided with high-top, knee-high boots. However water that fills the boots / shoes will warm to your body temperature, in the same way that a wetsuit works, to warm your feet.
Neoprene boots can come in variety of styles, some are literally neoprene socks, some are booties and others come up and over the ankle and can be knee high in some cases.
A thicker and more sturdy sole will greatly improve comfort on the foot wells of your kayak and also when walking over uneven ground e.g a rocky beach or river. The boot should be a good fit as if they are too loose water will circulate in your shoes and cool your feet, or worse wash away with a wave! However If the boots are too tight this will restrict the blood flow around the feet and cause the feet to be cold.
Comfort can be enhanced further by wearing wicking socks inside your boots, you cannot expect to have dry feet but they will feel less clammy.
Avoid tucking your trousers into the top of knee-high style boots as water will trickle down the trousers into your boots, ruining your plans to keep your feet dry.
Neoprene socks can be worn in conjunction with some summer footwear such as sandals, but a good pair of neoprene boots is advised. |
