Specially designed fishing kayaks have evolved from the sit on top kayaks with added features such as rod holders, anchor systems and electronic fish finders.
In the last few years kayak fishing has become a huge sport. Kayaks can be purchased inexpensively and have very little maintenance costs, opening the sport up to a range of people. Another advantage with kayak fishing is that they can be stored in small spaces and launched quickly.
The kayak has many other advantages for keen anglers, this is because it enables them to reach hidden bays, shallow water reefs, or follow shoals of fish feeding offshore, which were all previously inaccessible when fishing from the shore.
At AS Watersports we now have a wide selection of reasonably priced kayaks available.
At AS Watersports, Devon we offer a variety of kayaks that are suitable for fishing, to see our range please browse our online shop or alternatively pop in to our Exeter shop, located on the Quay. Like many other kayak dealers across the UK we have started customising kayaks for fishing
Before choosing a kayak there are several things to consider, your size and build, fitness level, where you intend to fish, estuary, river, open sea, the type of fishing and gear that you will have to carry, fly, lure or bait, how far you will have to paddle to reach your marks and of course your budget.
The majority of kayak fishermen and women choose to fish from a Sit-on-Top (SOT) kayak, they are easy to use. If you capsize you can climb back on (with a little practice). As with any type of kayak, there are different lengths. The lengths of fishing kayaks range from 8 ft to 16 ft, 28 in to 34 in beam, for open sea 13 feet plus will give the most enjoyable and safe ride.
You will require a seat for your fishing kayak, which may vary depending on which type of kayak you choose. A high backed seat with adequate padding in the base will get you started.
